Your Guide to Combatting The Winter Chill
Your Guide to Combatting The Winter Chill

Now that you’ve officially packed away your summer shirt dresses and mini-skirts, you might be left feeling a little uninspired by your wardrobe.

But, before you pull out your trusty trackpants and fall back into old habits, we’re here to tell you that dressing for the winter chill can be stylish and chic whilst still being equally cosy and warm.

In Queensland, we’re blessed with an incredible winter – think bright, sunny days with just a hint of chill in the air. It’s certainly a far cry from the dark and dreary mood of a Melbourne winter, but it can still be a shock to the system when it comes to getting dressed in the morning.

Here are some tips for combatting the winter chill, no matter the occasion.

Become a pro at layering

Leave your lightweight cotton shirts and slingback mules in the closet – you won’t be needing them for a while. Sometimes the weather calls for us to choose sensibly, but that shouldn’t mean you have to compromise on style.

So, choose weightier fabrics such as wool, cashmere, denim and leather and build layers of warmth.

Start with a trusty pair of denim jeans like this pair from Best&Less, tucked into a chic pair of knee-high riding boots from Novo Shoes. Add a cosy knit in a tonal hue (we’re particularly fond of Valleygirl’s range this season) and for extra warmth, grab a longline cardigan in a complementary colour.

For your accessories, don’t be afraid to don a cute hat. You’d be surprised to know that you lose 40-50 percent of your body heat through your head, so it really does make sense to keep your noggin’ warm if you’re trying to combat the cool.

Finally, finish your look with a sensible tote bag, printed scarf and some classic sunglasses (this Rockmans pair are under $30) and you’ll be feeling toasty warm (and super stylish) in no time.

Best&Less Women’s Long Kate Jegging $15, Novo Shoes Artesha Bag $59.95, Novo Shoes Jabir Boot $109.95, Rockmans Amber Rose Bree Sunglasses $29.99, Valleygirl Alicia High Neck Knit Jumper $14.95, Valleygirl Button Detail Mariner's Cap $16.95, Valleygirl Tracy Knit Cardigan $19.95, Valleygirl Wild Tiger Lightweight Scarf $16.95

Warm up for the weekend

It’s easy to relegate back to old habits on the weekend when it becomes all too easy to just throw on your biggest hoodie and call it a day.

But, we’re here to tell you that combatting the cool on the weekend can be just as fashion-forward as your summer weekend looks of the past (floaty linen dress, we’re looking at you) – and the best part is, there won’t be a single hoodie in sight.

The key to achieving a cohesive (and cosy) look is all about picking a colour story. Here, we’ve gone with the classic combination of navy and red.

Start with an adorable waffle-knit jumper with a fun slogan on the front such as this one from Best&Less and because comfort is key, pare back with some jogger pants from Lorna Jane.

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with scarves in your wardrobe – they can be worn simply around your neck, belted on top of a jacket, tied around your hair or draped over your shoulders, this red number from Rockmans pairs perfectly with our chosen colour story.

Finally, add some snuggly socks from Supre, a pair of slip-on loafers from Novo Shoes and stay handsfree through all your weekend activities with a crossbody bag from Valleygirl (can you believe this one is only $24.95?).

Best&Less Embroidered Knit Pullover $30, Lorna Jane Stride Athleisure Full Length Pant $129.99, Novo Shoes Cas Shoe $59.95, Rockmans Amber Rose Carmen Textured Scarf $29.99, Supre 90s Slogan Crew Socks $5, Valleygirl Letter Point Easy Weekend Cap $14.95, Valleygirl Scarlett Shoulder Clutch Bag $24.95

Here at Capalaba Central we promise that great style is always possible, even during the coldest days of winter! And remember, if you’re really feeling the cool, it’s always nice and warm inside a shopping centre… (hint hint!).
